A Digital Advent Calendar for Kids: Safe, Ad-Free & Peek-Proof

Updated for the 2026 holiday season · 4 min read

The store-bought chocolate calendar lasts eleven seconds per day. A digital advent calendar for kids that you made lasts longer — because behind today's door is a photo of them as a baby, a video message from grandma, or a silly snowman to poke — and tomorrow's door is a mystery they genuinely cannot open early.

Is a digital advent calendar safe for children?

It depends on the app, so check three things: ads, accounts, and data. Advent Maker has none of them — it's rated 4+, shows no advertising, has no chat or social features, requires no login, and collects no data at all. The calendar file you make travels directly from your phone to the device your child uses; nothing is uploaded anywhere.

And the classic advent-calendar problem — the child who opens all 24 doors on December 1st — is solved by design. Doors unlock strictly one per day. The app even shows how long until the next one, which handles the "how many sleeps until Christmas?" question too.

What to put behind the doors for a child

Age tips: under 5, lead with photos of family faces and the snowman. Ages 6–10, add missions and riddles. Tweens: memes and inside jokes keep them opening doors without admitting they love it.

Setting it up (10–15 minutes)

  1. Install the free Advent Maker app.
  2. Create a New calendar — one per child, so nobody fights over whose turn it is.
  3. Fill the 24 doors with the mix above (see all door ideas).
  4. Share the calendar file to the family iPad or their device — or keep it on yours and make door-opening a breakfast ritual.

Make it a family tradition

Because calendars are just files, distant family can join in: grandma makes her own calendar for the kids (guide here), you make one for the kids, and the kids can even help make one for grandma. Everyone opens doors at breakfast and compares notes over the weekend call.
